Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 36 housing units for soldiers of the rank of Corporal and below at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.
The ceremony formed part of activities marking the first anniversary of the Chief of Army Staff in office.
The COAS was represented at the commissioning on Thursday by the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Major General I.A. Ajose.
The quarters, which were in a state of dilapidation with leaking roofs, cracked walls and damaged floors, were fully rehabilitated with structural reinforcement, replacement of roofing sheets, doors and windows, as well as new electrical and plumbing fittings.

Speaking at the event, Major General Ajose said the provision of decent accommodation is critical to troops’ morale, discipline and operational effectiveness, noting that personnel welfare remains a top priority under the COAS’ Soldiers First Concept.
He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army and commended the Directorate of Procurement, 47 Engineer Brigade and the contractor for delivering the project to standard.
He urged beneficiaries to maintain the facilities and uphold discipline and accountability.
Also speaking, the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brigadier General Solomon Diwa, described the event as a significant milestone that reflects the commitment of the COAS to improving the welfare and working conditions of troops in the theatre.
He said the improved accommodation would enhance operational readiness and boost the morale of troops in protecting lives and property.
Earlier, the Commander, 47 Engineer Brigade, Brigadier General Abubakar Saleh, said the project was supervised to ensure compliance with approved specifications and quality standards.
He disclosed that the project comprises three blocks of 12 quarters, providing a total of 36 two-bedroom family flats for junior personnel.

Other ongoing projects at the Cantonment include additional Corporals and Below Quarters, senior officers’ accommodation, a new 7 Division Headquarters complex, two boreholes and a 50-bed ward for the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Warrant Officer Ogunmodede Sunday thanked the Army leadership for prioritising the welfare of junior personnel and pledged to maintain the facilities.
