AU Strongly Condemns the Killing of More than 50 Civilians, Abduction of Women, Children in Nigeria

The African Union Commission (AUC) has condemned in the strongest of terms the recent massacre of innocent Nigerians in Zamfara State in recent coordinated attacks.

His Excellency (HE), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the union, “strongly condemns the heinous coordinated terrorist attacks perpetrated on 21 February 2026 in Zamfara State, Northwestern Nigeria, which resulted in the killing of more than 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children,” a statement by the commission read.

The chairperson “unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children,” describing such acts as “grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security and stability.”

The AU expressed “full solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

In his eulogy, HE Ali Youssouf conveyed his “heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.”

While calling for “the immediate, safe and unconditional release of all abducted women and children,” he affirmed the AU’s “unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting peace.”

In line with the AU’s “commitment to peace, security and stability on the continent,” the President of Ethiopia called for “strengthened, coordinated, and collective action to protect civilian populations and prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
