John Azi, an abducted graduate of the University of Jos, has been freed after Nigerians paid an unnamed amount as ransom

John Arum Azi, a graduate of the University of Jos in central Nigeria, has finally regained his freedom from his captors after an unknown amount of ransom was raised to secure his release.

A week ago, Advocatus Africa reported that “a client had invited Azi to travel to Kaduna to help repair a keyboard. After leaving his home in Jos on the ill-fated journey, he was abducted.

“Holding AK-47 rifles and speaking in Hausa Language, the criminal gang brutalise Azi, questioning his Christian identity.

“Give us N30 million or you’ll forget about your life,” they insisted, pressing harder and harder as he helplessly cried for help.”

Meanwhile, according to sources, a suspect identified as Musa Maliya, a native of Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, has been named in connection with the kidnapping.

Maliya is allegedly active on TikTok and carries out his criminal activities in Gumo, a community in Plateau State.

In an emotional Facebook post responding to the horrific video showing Azi being brutalised by his captors, his biological brother, Joseph N. Azi wrote, “Today marks one week since my brother was kidnapped. We pray for your safe release, John Arum Azi.”

His release has been described as a moment of relief and gratitude for his family and friends after many days of fear and uncertainty.

Citizens question why terrorists and bandits film videos of their victims and use social media platforms to demand ransom, despite the potential for surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering.

Azi’s captivity highlights the delicate nature of security, the fragility of life, and the urgent need for vigilance throughout Nigeria.

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) must continue to advocate against insecurity in the targeted communities of the nation’s Middle Belt region.

Their efforts are crucial to ensuring that no family has to endure the same ordeal that the young man who recently regained his freedom experienced.
