The Archbishops and Bishops of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) have expressed their strong fraternal solidarity with the President of a West African Country, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, following the recent withdrawal of an honorary doctorate title by Lincoln University in the United States of America.
The Conference noted with concern the circumstances surrounding the decision, particularly considering the longstanding historical relationship between Ghana and the institution, exemplified by the legacy of the country’s First President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The Bishops in a statement signed by Bishop of Sunyani and President, Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi commended President Mahama for his continued leadership on the international stage, particularly his instrumental role in securing broad support for the recent resolution at the United Nations addressing the enduring legacy of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
The statement reads, “We, the Archbishops and Bishops of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), express our fraternal solidarity with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama following the recent withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University in the United States.
“The Conference notes with concern the circumstances surrounding this decision, particularly considering the longstanding historical relationship between Ghana and the institution, exemplified by the legacy of our First President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. While we respect the autonomy of institutions, we emphasize the need for transparency, fairness, and due regard for the dignity of individuals and nations.
“We further acknowledge and commend His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for his continued leadership on the international stage, particularly his instrumental role in securing broad support for the recent resolution at the United Nations addressing the enduring legacy of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.”
According to them, the relentless efforts by the Ghana leaders and the final decision of the United Nations General Assembly reflects a deep commitment to justice, historical redress, and global solidarity for African peoples and the diaspora.
“The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference also warmly commends the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana for its principled and forthright expression of support for the President in this matter.
“We particularly acknowledge the leadership of its General Secretary, Rev. Ernest Birikorang, whose response reflects moral clarity, pastoral responsibility, and a commitment to upholding Christian values and national dignity.
Bishop Gyamfi noted that as national discourse continued regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference encourages Parliament of Ghana to do its utmost to ensure the timely transmission of the Bill to the President for assent.
“We call on all relevant authorities to act with diligence and a strong sense of national responsibility in advancing this important legislative process.
“We also assure His Excellency John Dramani Mahama of our prayers, that he may be granted wisdom, courage, and clarity of purpose in the discharge of his constitutional duties, and that he will act with conviction in giving timely assent to the Bill.
“We echo the call by the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, for prayer and national reflection. In moments such as these, unity among Christian communities and the broader society remains essential. We entrust our nation and its leaders to the guidance of Almighty God.”
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference assures all Ghanaians of its continued prayers for peace, wisdom, and unity in their beloved country.
