21-Year-Old U.S. Marine of Nigerian Descent Dies after Falling off Ship

The death has occurred of Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, 21, a Marine of Nigerian descent following a fall overboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) in the Caribbean Sea on 7 February 2026.

The service announced that Oforah was officially declared dead on 10 February 2026 after exhaustion and 72-hour search which involved multiple assets.

Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he is reported as the first U.S. military to die in the Operation Southern Spear, a U.S. military campaign in the Caribbean region which started at end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.

Targeting vessels and narcotrafficking, the naval operation climaxed in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores in January 2026, who were then flown to the US to face prosecution.

Until his death, Oforah from Florida, who was deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit had joined the Marine Corps Recruit Depot-Parris Island in October 2023 and graduated in February 2024.

In a statement on behalf of Navy-Marine Corps team, Col. Tom Trimble said, “The loss of Lance Cpl. Oforah is deeply felt across the entire Navy-Marine Corps team. He will be profoundly missed, and his dedicated service will not be forgotten.”

The 22nd MEU commanding officer added that “We are all grieving alongside the Oforah family.”
