Msgr. Gabriel Osu, who has paid his dues to the communication apostolate of the Catholic Church in Nigeria dies at 71

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the death of a veteran priest who has paid his dues to the communication apostolate of the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Osu who died Friday, 8th May 2026 was born on Sunday, 5th September 1954, served as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications for many years and was until his death, a resident at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.

During his 40th priestly ordination anniversary, Mr. Tony AgbuLgba underlined that Msgr. Osu, “is a media colossus who continues to make his mark in the communication world.”

He recalled that while the veteran priest served as the Director of Social Communications for two decades, “Msgr. Osu was the toast of the Nigeria media,” clarifying that, “using his closeness with media owners and other top brass, he has a way of selling the views of the Church to the world in ways very few others are able to do.”

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Lagos disclosed his demise after 44 years, 5 months and 6 days of service to God and humanity.

“With a heavy heart but with strong faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection of the body, we announce the death of our brother and priest,” Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lagos Archdiocese noted in a news bulletin.

Ordained on Saturday, 5th December, 1981, the priest of the Archdiocese of Lagos served in many parishes and institutions in the Archdiocese including Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, St. Gregory College, South-West, Ikoyi, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi, Lagos, St. Paul Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta, and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.

The Archbishop urged for prayers for the repose of the soul of Msgr. Osu, and all who mourn him, adding, “May God grant him eternal rest and a place of happiness, light, and peace among the saints.”

In the circular, the Archdiocese noted that the funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later date.
