Nigeria: Catholic TV migrated to GOtv before its 15th anniversary, urgently needs over N220m to upgrade to DSTV

The Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of the See of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, has urged support for Catholic Television of Nigeria (CTV) to maximise its over N200million potential of fully upgrading to DSTV.

“The occasion also commemorated one year since CTV’s successful migration to GOtv (channel 115),” Archbishop Ignatius A. Kaigama disclosed on his official Facebook page, following CTV’s 15th anniversary celebration, which was held on Thursday, 30th April 2026, at the Holy Trinity Events Centre, Maitama, Abuja.

It aspires to “upgrade to DSTV,” with an “over N220 Million” budget

Stressing that the media outfit aspires to “upgrade to DSTV,” with an “over N220 Million” budget, Archbishop Kaigama urged for support to actualise the dreams of the Catholic media fully during the event.

“During the event, some funds were raised to support the ongoing needs of the station, especially the acquisition of equipment to enable it to function optimally, considering its planned upgrade,” he said.

He noted that “some pledges were made, and a commitment to future support, especially by those who received special awards.”

The former Archbishop of Jos, Plateau State, used the occasion to express “profound appreciation to individuals and organisations who have supported CTV since its inception.”

The prelate prayed for all who watch, volunteer and support the Church’s evangelising mission through digital media.

“God bless and reward all who watch, subscribe, volunteer their time and talents, and contribute financially to grow the CTV. We encourage everyone to continue supporting the CTV,” Archbishop Kaigama prayed.

Earlier in a news conference, the Executive Director of CTV, Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Alumuku, disclosed that the station was established in 2010 through the vision of the then Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan.

He emphasised that since then, it has maintained its commitment to professionalism, balanced reporting and upholding spirituality in the broadcasting landscape in Nigeria.

Officials and guests highlighted the station’s growth, including a 300% viewership increase since its migration to GOtv.

“CTV has remained a vital instrument for evangelisation.”

While Senator Osita Izunaso, OFR, Ph.D. chaired the occasion, Dr. Princess Frank-Chukwuani highlighted the station’s potential for national influence.

“I had the honour of serving as Chairman of the Occasion,” Senator Izunaso wrote on his Facebook Page, describing the gathering as an “epoch-making event.”

The politician and Lawyer currently representing Imo West (Orlu) Senatorial District in the 10th Nigerian National Assembly, lauded the platform for its dogged evangelising mission, praying God to bless all who have invested in it.

“I heartily congratulate the Management and Staff of Catholic Television on this remarkable milestone. For 15 years, CTV has remained a vital instrument for evangelisation, promoting the values of the Catholic faith and broadcasting the Gospel to homes across Nigeria and beyond. The migration to GOTV a year ago has further expanded this reach, bringing the light of Christ to even more viewers.

“I pray for more insightful and impactful programming as CTV continues in its noble mission of broadcasting the Catholic faith to the entire world. May God bless and strengthen all who labour in this apostolate,” he noted.

CTV as a tool for “mindset orientation.”

Reflecting on its growth and challenges, Assistant Director of Communications, Rev. Fr Kenneth Agwu lauded the 15-year milestone despite high operational costs in Nigeria’s media sector.

On his part, the Deputy Director of Administration, Rev. Fr Victor Ogunyemi, spoke about CTV’s mission-driven journalism, stressing that it is a “balanced media apostolate” that covers social issues like insecurity.

Mr. Henry Adaba, the Publicity Sub-Secretary Chairman, described the platform as a tool for “mindset orientation,” promoting unity and spiritual growth.

The event, which was co-chaired by Dr. Sir Mike Okiro, attracted many dignitaries and well-wishers from within and outside the capital city.

It also had in attendance other distinguished guests, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Her Excellency, Lady Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives of the Executive Governors of Imo and Plateau States.
